Breeding & Showing Rabbits & Cavies in Alaska

ALASKA'S RABBIT AND CAVY JUDGES

The Alaska Rabbit & Cavy Breeders Club is proud to introduce our fine judges that reside in Alaska.  We have Enlow Walker, Scott Henninger, Randy Cler, and April Wright.

Enlow Walker

Meet Enlow Walker of North Pole, Alaska.  Enlow  is a family practice physician that has lived in our state for 26 years.  He has been an ARBA member for 17 of those years and a rabbit judge for the past 7 years.  He was recently awarded a lifetime membership with the Alaska Rabbit & Cavy Breeders Club for his years of dedication and judging of our rabbit shows.

Enlow's favorite part of being a judge is meeting people and getting the opportunity to handle many rabbits.  He is usually accompanied by his lovely wife, Pat, who is gracious enough to scribe for him at our local rabbit shows.

Until 2007, Enlow raised both Polish and Florida White rabbits.  His claim to fame came with his Best of Breed win at the 1998 ARBA Nationals in Portland, OR with one of his Polish rabbits.  Such a talent and eye should not go to waste and we continue with our encouragment to start his rabbitry back up.

When Enlow has time to spare he enjoys such hobbies as fishing, hunting, and coin collecting.  He also enjoys traveling and has been to Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana to judge rabbit shows.  He would like to continue judging in Alaska and other states and is open to further invitations to judge.  He can be reached through e-mail at erwalker@alaska.net.

Scott Henninger

Scott Henninger has lived in our great state of Alaska for 39 years.  Most of those years have been spent raising a variety of rabbit breeds.  He raised Hollands, Florida Whites, Satins, Giant Angoras, English Spots, and Netherland Dwarfs, but he is best known for his Checkered Giants.  As a member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association for the past 29 years, Scott has spent the last 22 of those years as a rabbit judge.

Although he no longer raises rabbits, Scott continues judging at the local rabbit shows.  He enjoys discussions with exhibitors about serious breeding ideas for improving conformation.  He is usually accompanied by his trustee side kick and scribe, Jan Anderson.  Both he and Jan have been past officers for the Alaska Rabbit and Cavy Breeders Club back when it was still called the Alaska Rabbit Breeders Club.  For his years of service, Scott has been awarded with a lifetime membership in the ARCBC.

Retired from the Anchorage School District as a Middle School Plant Operator, he now enjoys spending his leisure years attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and taking country drives with his wife on beautiful summer days.  Many people in Alaska are hoping that they have many opportunities to do that this year as we went without a summer last year!

Randy Cler

Randy is an Electronics Technician by weekday and a Rabbit and Cavy Judge on many of his weekends.  He has lived in Alaska for 24 years and has been an American Rabbit Breeder Association member for almost 20 of those years.  Judging is a recent venture for Randy that started with a rabbit license almost 3 years ago and was followed by a cavy judging license 1 1/2 years ago making him our only dual carded judge in the state....and our only cavy judge.  In regards to his experience with rabbits and cavies, Randy made the statement below:

"I have been raising rabbits for almost 20 years and cavies for over 5.  I have raised Rex, Mini Rex, Dutch, Tans, Silver Martins, Polish, Netherland Dwarfs, Jersey Woolys, New Zealands, and Satins.  I currently raise Californians, Holland Lops, Florida Whites, Mini Satins, and Thriantas.  I have raised the following breeds of cavies;  American, American Satin, Abbys, Teddys, Teddy Satins, Peruvian, Peruvian Satins, Silkies, White Cresteds.  I currently have primarily Americans and White Cresteds".

When Randy isn't working with rabbits and cavies, he enjoys golfing, hunting, fishing, and shooting long range handguns.

Randy has judged in Alaska, Arizona, California, Georgia, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Washington.  He appreciates the opportunity to visit new places, make new friends, and work with breeds he doesn't see often.  If you're interested in inviting Randy to your state to judge, he can be contacted by e-mail at allisawrrabbits@gci.net or by phone at 907-223-3913.

April Wright

Born 22 years ago in Anchorage, Alaska, April is our newest rabbit judge.  She may be new to judging, but she isn't new to rabbits!  As a member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association for the last 10 year, she has raised many different breeds of rabbits, but has recently settled her focus on the Polish rabbit and all of its many varieties.

When asked recently about what she enjoyed most about rabbit judging, this is what she had to say:

"My favorite part about judging is interacting with the breeders and helping them understand what they can do to better their breeding program.  I also really like handling the rabbits and finding those real "Wow" animals.  It's always a rewarding experience for me and the breeder.

April is a licensed Cosmotologist/Hairdresser as a profession and enjoys horseback riding, competitive trail riding, four-wheeling, hunting, fishing, and camping.  She takes advantage of the finest Alaska has to offer for hobbies.  Having recently completed her schooling, April is now ready to explore the rest of the country to share and learn as a rabbit judge and is open for invitations to judge rabbits in other states.

April Wright can be contacted through her website at www.freewebs.com/bunnaigirl or by e-mail at katmai@mtaonline.net.
